Despite the close 2-1 scoreline Zambia qualified for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a facile victory over Gabon, who entered the final group games topping Group D.
Zambia’s Rainford Kalaba netted the first with a deft chip over Gabon keeper Ebang Ovono, before James Chamanga doubled the lead in the second half.
Gabon substitute Fabrice Do Marcolino made things respectable for Gabon with a late consolation, but it wasn’t enough to see them through what was the tightest group in the competition.
Gabon, who only needed a draw to progress, will be heartbroken, but Zambia more than deserved their victory.
This now means that Zambia have come from bottom of the group to qualify as its winners but their win came at a price, as yellow cards for Kabala and centre-half Kampamba Chintu means they will both miss the quarter final game against Nigeria on Monday.
