Little Gabon secured a point against Tunisia to give them top spot in Group D of the African Nations Cup and ensure that either Cameroon or Tunisia will not make it through to the knock out stages.
Gabon could be happier with the result. After beating Cameroon 1-0 in their opening game, this draw against (on paper) a technically stronger team means that they are the only team in the tournament yet to concede a goal apart from Burkina Faso, who have only played one game so far.
After three minutes Ragued found himself unmarked in the box but the Tunisian could not deflect Dhaouadi’s corner goalwards. Eric Mouloungui was similarily profligant in the 18th minute when he was unable to direct his header towards the Tunisian goal.
Gabon had a lucky let off when Tunisian striker Amine Chermiti picked up Manga’s short back pass. Chermiti rounded keeper Ovono but then knocked the ball wide. Ovono himself then almost put his side in trouble after 60 minutes when he spilled a low free kick from Mikari, but Danuel Cousin hacked the ball clear.
Tunisia substitute Akaichi hit the crossbar in the 81st minute from close range and Cousin headed wide late on, meaning that the points were shared and Gabon head Group D.
