A nil-nil stalemate on Monday was all that was needed for African Cup of Nations hosts Angola and England’s World Cup 2010 opponents Algeria to make it through to the quarter-finals.
The hosts ended their group campaign as Group A winners, leaving Algeria to fill the second berth.
Although for those that are just seeing the scoreline the game did have it’s chances with Algeria’s best effort coming from Madjid Bougherra, while later on Karim Matmour, failed to connect in front of an open goal.
Angola had a free-kick finger-tipper over the crossbar, but in the end the draw saw the hosts win the group with five points, with Algeria and Mali finished level on four points and Malawi bottom of the pile on three.
However, under the tournament rules the head-to-head record between Algeria and Mali was enough to see Algeria secure the runner-ups slot.
Angola will now face the runners-up from Group B while Algeria will take on the winners of that same group – both matches will be held on Sunday.
