Africa Cup of Nation holders Egypt successfully defended their title and have now won the last three competitions after seeing off Ghana 1-0 in the final.

Egyptian substitute Mohamed Gedo netted the only goal of the game, curling in a great shot past Ghana keeper Richard Kingson in the 85th minute.

However, Gedo’s winner came totally against the run of play, but Ghana didn’t really have much to complain about as, despite plenty of possession, they failed to create many real openings.

Gedo finished the tournament as the top scorer and Egypt became the first team to win three successive titles, while this win means Egypt have now won the cup seven times.

Nigeria defeated Algeria 1-0 to claim third place at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria took the third place in the Africa Cup of Nations after seeing off a much depleted Algeria 1-0

Forward Victor Obinna’s won the game for the Super Eagles with a 54th minute effort, but Nigeria should really have won by more than just the one goal as they failed to convert a number of good chances.

Victory for the Super Eagles meant they have now picked up four bronze medals in this competition in the last five played.

Ghana are through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations after they held on to a first-half lead to progress.

Ghana made it through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations after seeing off Nigeria in a tight and tense affair.

Striker Asamoah Gyan put the Black Stars ahead after 21 minutes after losing his marker and heading in, but it was Ghana keeper, Richard Kingson, and his defence that were the stars of the show frustrating Nigeria fro the rest of the game.

The win means this will be Ghana’s first Nations Cup final appearance since 1992, but Nigeria’s defeat have piled more pressure onto their coach Shaibu Amodu.

Egypt cruised into their third successive Africa Cup of Nations final with a 4-0 win over bitter rivals Algeria.

Tensions before the game were already at boiling point due to the controversial World Cup qualifying game the two played out last year, so it wasn’t a surprise that the game saw three red cards, all handed to Algeria.

Hosni Abd Rabou put Egypt ahead with a penalty, but it was a double-whammy as Algeria’s Rafik Halliche was also sent-off for the foul.

This set up the easy win for the Pharaohs as Mohamed Zidan doubled the lead, before Mohamed Abdelshafi added another, while Mohamed Gedo put things beyond doubt.

Algeria totally lost their heads and saw Nadir Belhadj and keeper Fawzi Chaouchi also sent for an early bath late on.

This now sets up a fascinating final between Egypt and Ghana on Sunday.

The holders and winners for the past two tournaments, Egypt, have set up a bitter semi-final clash with Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations after an extra-time win over Cameroon.

Egyptian captain Ahmed Hassan was the star of the show for the current champions, netting twice – once in normal time and once in extra time.

Cameroon took an early lead when Egypt’s Hassan headed in a corner for an own goal, but he made amends by cancelling that out 10 minutes later to bring the game level.

Hassan was also making history as the 34-year-old skipper was making his 170th appearance for the Pharoahs – an African record.

Egypt will now face bitter rivals Algeria in the semi-finals, which is a repeat of the controversial World Cup play-off clash in November that saw Algeria qualify for South Africa.

Nigeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after seeing off Zambia 5-4 on penalties.

The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and extra-time, but it was the Super Eagles that held their nerve in the shoot-out, with keeper Vincent Enyeama saving Thomas Nyirenda’s effort and then going onto scored the winning kick himself.

Nigeria’s win was made to look even better when they were reduced to 10-men in extra-time after Onyekachi Apam picked up his second yellow card.

They will now take on Ghana on Thursday in an all-west African affair with the chance to play the winner of Egypt and Algeria in the final on Sunday.

Kader Keita’s 89th-minute strike looked to have put the game to bed for Drogba’s side, but Algerian sub Madjid Bougherra netted a last-gasp header to take the contest into extra time.

When in extra-time it was some horrendous defending from Ivory Coast that saw Algeria’s Hameur Bouazza send Algeria into the semi-finals.

In an end-to-end encounter many people’s fancies to go all the way, Cameroon, just scraped through to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after holding Tunisia to a 2-2 draw in Lubango.

Armine Chermiti put Tunisia into the lead after just a minute with a clinical header, but the record scorer in this competition, Samuel Eto’o, leveled the score at the beginning of the second half.

Not long after it was disaster for Cameroon as defender Aurelien Chedjou’s own goal put Tunisia ahead again, but they’d barely finished celebrating when Landry N’Guemo fired in Cameroon’s second equalizer in the game to see them progress to the Qtr-finals.

The result saw Cameroon go through in second place, setting up what looks to be the game of the competition so far when they play holders Egypt for a place in the Semi-final.

Despite the close 2-1 scoreline Zambia qualified for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a facile victory over Gabon, who entered the final group games topping Group D.

Zambia’s Rainford Kalaba netted the first with a deft chip over Gabon keeper Ebang Ovono, before James Chamanga doubled the lead in the second half.

Gabon substitute Fabrice Do Marcolino made things respectable for Gabon with a late consolation, but it wasn’t enough to see them through what was the tightest group in the competition.

Gabon, who only needed a draw to progress, will be heartbroken, but Zambia more than deserved their victory.

This now means that Zambia have come from bottom of the group to qualify as its winners but their win came at a price, as yellow cards for Kabala and centre-half Kampamba Chintu means they will both miss the quarter final game against Nigeria on Monday.

Group D
