African Nations Cup

Between 10-31 January 2010 Angola will host the African Cup of Nations, or as we know it – the African Nations Cup.

This is the 27th African Nations cup and the final 16 teams have battled their way through over 2 years of qualifying and 53 African National teams to reach the final.

This year’s tournament has four official venues – the Estadio 11 Novembro in Luanda, the Estadio Chimandela in Cabinda, the Complexo de Sr. Da Graca in Benguela and the Estadio Alta de Chela in Lubango.

The Togo National team came under sustained gunfire on Friday evening when the team bus that they were travelling in was intercepted by the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda who open fire on the vehicle, killing the bus driver and seriously injuring a number of other people.

With no way of the bus moving, the Togo players were forced to wait under the seats until police could escort them out.

Since the incident on Friday, the death toll has now unfortunately risen to 3, and one of the players – Kodjovi Obilale has been airlifted to hospital in South Africa to be treated for gunshot wounds to his chest.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the Togo National team decided to withdraw from the tournament – there was some initial confusion about whether the team would continue  – the players wanted to continue, but the Togolese Prime Minister Gilbert Fousson Houngbo has ordered the team back home.

Cabinda is an enclave in Angola that has been at civil war for over 30 years. Worryingly, FLEC have announced that they are going to use the tournament as a way of putting pressure on the Angolan Government to withdraw from Cabinda. With some of the group games being played in oil rich Cabina, football managers around the world are going to be watching anxiously to see what happens. Premier league players, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Kolo Toure are all scheduled to take part in matches in Cabinda.

It has just been announced by the governing body of the 2010 African Nations Cup, that due to Togo not definitively deciding whether or noth to play, that if they do not arrive in time to play their game today (11 January 2010), then they will be disqualified. Although at the time of this decision (13:56 UK time) it is unlikely that they will be able to get to the ground, or even the country in time, it will be interesting to see what happens. Its almost like watching Cool Runnings sometimes, following the Togo team.
